So you are decorating a small room and want to make it look bigger! Here are a few home decorating ideas to help you with this decorating challenge.

First and foremost, banish the clutter! It makes the problems of a small space even more troublesome. By removing surplus furniture and little-used belongings, you can start your room makeover with a clean slate. According to Arts and Crafts designer, William Morris, “have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.”

By keeping furniture items to a minimum you will create extra floor space and give the room a clean, uncluttered look. Diminish “solid shapes” by choosing furniture with legs that help create a sense of space–a home decorating idea to use over and over!

Another home decorating idea to add to your list is to declutter the eye-level zone you see when entering a room. Avoid putting wall-mounted cabinets or shelves on the wall that faces the entrance. The use of mirrors is a wonderful home decorating idea. Because of their reflective surface, mirrors “bounce” light around a room which creates openness. Other reflective surfaces which create the illusion of space are painted glossy finishes on a wall or marble floors in a bathroom or kitchen.

Painting your walls with pale shades of “receding” colors such as green, lilac, or blue instead of bolder colors like red or orange will give the feeling of spaciousness. A home decorating idea to use in any size room is an accent wall in a contrasting color that will give the room a focal point.

A long, low bench or coffee table can be used along a wall to help lengthen the room. Choose bookcases that are more horizontal than vertical to give a sense of roominess.

Keep patterns at a minimum. Avoid wallpaper or upholstery material with large patterns. Use small designs and work with only one or two in the room–you don’t want “pattern overload.”

Instead, using tape or even an imaginary line, create a triangle in any spot on your wall. My advice would be to start with the main wall in the very first room that your guests enter when they come inside. This wall should be considered the main area that you’re looking to fancy up a bit.

The next step is very simple: fill the inside of this imaginary triangle with works of art that you find appealing. These pieces can consist of picture portraits to hang on your wall, artwork that you find soothing, or even uniquely designed clocks that have a touch of color to them. Remember, your goal is not to clutter the entire wall up with your displays, but instead only place these items inside your triangle. In fact, you can do this in every room of your house and create a very structured, yet appealing design to your wall. You’re probably thinking that it is extremely expensive to purchase a large painting, and it can be! However, you do not have to run out and spend hundreds of dollars to do this.

If you look hard enough and enjoy shopping around, you will be surprised at just how many bargains you can find in your local newspaper, flea markets, and even garage sales on the weekends. On the other hand, one of my favorite items to use for wall displays is a colorful rug or a quilt.

We even have one room where the main wall shows off a piece of white painted wood that our 10-year-old used to create her own artwork on. Of course not everybody may find this large children’s painting appealing, but we do, and that is what is important here – find the right cheap home decorating ideas that makes you and your family happy!

Want to freshen up an area of your home over the weekend, but have no home decorating ideas? That’s absolutely no problem. Sprucing up a space doesn’t require a lot of money or time if you have the ingenuity to utilize what you already have!

Preparation
Getting started is always the hardest part. You must always begin by cleaning the rooms you plan to work on, pulling out furniture, dusting and wiping off surfaces. Make sure that everything you will not be using is stowed away- you can pull out everything you need later. Don’t neglect the windows- treatments should be removed and cleaned before you tackle the glass. Kitchen
In my opinion the kitchen is a great place to start. It’s so easy to make some simple changes to give the entire room a new feel. If you have decorative cups or bowls sat out, give them a good dust and swap ‘em out for some different ones. Placemats are extremely cheap or can be made at home and can easily inspire other small changes. A seasonal centerpiece can instantly transform your kitchen without the need to purchase anything.

Master Bedroom
We all spend so much time in our bedrooms that it’s easy to become dissatisfied by a stale design or arrangement. An easy quick pickup for any room (provided you have the muscle power) is to take all furniture, tables, EVERYTHING and rearrange it. Turn the entire room around by facing your bed in a different direction, adding or removing a side table, or even switching out some compatible dcor from another room. It will feel like a completely different room in no time!

Living Area
If your living area is boring, the rest of your house seems boring as well. The Living room is my second fave spot to spruce up using some great home decorating ideas. Again, changing the direction that the occupants are facing can make a huge difference. If you understandably don’t want to lug the couches around, simply throw a new blanket over the back. It will change the look of what is most likely the room’s centerpiece and can be complimented by some matching seasonal throw pillows. The dullness should disappear with some new or re-arranged lighting elements since a new glow can change the entire appearance of an object and space.

Guest Bedroom
Expecting some weekend guests? Getting the dust out of unused rooms is the best place to start. When nothing gets touched every often it’s easy to forget how much luster and shine is taken away by even the lightest layer of dust. Brush off the spider webs from ceiling fans and windows, because your guest will probably be staring at them when they’re laying down for bed. A natural floral arrangement is sure to remove the musty smell of a seldom used guest room while creating a welcoming environment for your friends or family who stay there.

Flowers, plants, and certain decorations can be switched between rooms to give them a new life. It’s amazing how much of a difference context makes when you’ve been living with the same objects for years. There is no reason to ever tire of your surroundings when it only takes a little rearranging. These home decorating ideas shouldn’t take more than a couple of hours to complete giving you more time to focus on something more important: enjoying your fresh new environment!
